Optional Field Tour & Programs

Thursday, March 13, 2008

Join us on Thursday for one of several educationally rewarding and professionally refreshing teaching and learning opportunities.

One full-day tour to investigate "free choice" and other forms of non-formal education will be offered. There is also an in-class program being offered by faculty from the OSU Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL).

Sign up for one of these programs on our on-line registration.

1. Natural Resource Education Tour & Winery Lunch
(Half-day Trip)

The Willamette Valley in which Corvallis is situated has an abundance of wintering shorebirds, waterfowl, and wildlife scattered among boutique wineries and beautiful scenery. This tour will begin with wildlife viewing at the Bellfountain Wetland Mitigation Bank, Finley Wildlife Refuge, and Tyee Winery. It will include discussion on mitigation banking and compensatory credits, refuges as educational resources, and sustainable farm partnerships. A morning break of coffee and pastries and a lunch will be provided by Gathering Together Farm, a local certified organic vegetable and fruit farm. Lunch will be served at Tyee Vineyards and will include wine and wine tasting. Tyee Vineyards has received a Private Landowner Stewardship award from the Oregon Chapter of The Wildlife Society for their innovative stewardship practices.

The Coast Range of western Oregon has been long recognized as one of the most important forest and timber producing areas in North America. Ownership of these forestlands includes a mix of large corporations, family- owned forests, and state and federal agencies. The topography of the area intergrades from low elevation farmlands to the foothill oak woodlands, and up into the Douglas-fir, western hemlock and noble fir zones of higher elevations.

After lunch the tour will continue to low elevation Douglas-fir forest to discuss community outreach, education, and public involvement in community forest management. We'll end the day by stopping by an old-forest stand on Marys Peak, the tallest mountain in Oregon’s Coast range (elev. 4,000'). You will be brought back to Corvallis in time for a wine and appetizer reception for all conference participants.

Time: 10am – 4:00pm
Cost: $20 per person
Bring: Binoculars, rain gear, waterproof shoes and warm layered clothing.

2. Oregon Coast Environmental Education Tour and Brewery Lunch
(Full-day Trip)

This trip has been cancelled.

3. Are Your Students Learning? Developing an Effective Assessment Plan for Your Class

This practical workshop will give faculty an opportunity to:

  • identify their own learning outcomes,
  • share ideas about their own successes in assessing student learning, and
  • create an effective assessment plan.

Dr. Peter Saunders, Director of OSU’s Center for Teaching and Learning, will introduce key concepts that distinguish assessment from evaluation and provide an overview of Angelo and Cross’ book Classroom Assessment Techniques: A Handbook for College Teachers.

Attendees will be introduced to the web resource Field-Tested Learning Assessment Guide (Flag) and learn how to create their own assessment plans for each class. Participants are encouraged to bring course outcomes and sample assessment instruments from their own classes.

Please feel free to explore OSU’s Center for Teaching and Learning’s resources.

Time: 2:00-4:00 p.m.
Location: CH2M Hill Alumni Center
Cost: free; refreshments provided
Bring: outcomes and assessment procedures for one course (optional)
